Harvest Hands: Each school year, MPIV provides volunteers to help with the Harvest Hands Community Development program. The mission of the program is to “furthering healthy living, education, spiritual formation and economic development in South Nashville.” Students serve as elementary or middle school mentors for the Harvest Hands after school program and/or help with the “emPower Sports” or Lunch Buddy program, as well as other seasonal volunteer opportunities.
McMurray Middle School: Volunteering at McMurray gives MPIV volunteers the chance to help middle school students struggling in certain subject areas in a friendly one-on-one environment. Vanderbilt students are paired with the same middle schoolers each time in hopes that we can make a positive difference in students’ academics and establish relationships with McMurray students that extend beyond the classroom.
Siloam Health Care Clinic: MPIV volunteers at Siloam have the chance to work with the diverse population of Nashville in a healthcare setting. Siloam Clinic is a "charitable clinic for the uninsured" and does not turn any away because of his or her inability to pay. Vanderbilt students can serve as medical interpreters in the clinic and can shadow other interpreters until they feel comfortable enough to interpret on their own!
ESL Classes at Paragon Mills Elementary: At Paragon Mills Elementary, MPIV volunteers have the opportunity to teach ESL to the parents of students who attend Paragon Mills Elementary School. Volunteers can help with classes of a variety of levels, from Beginner to Advanced. Prior preparation is not required and spanish proficiency is not required, but is useful!
Refugee and Immigrant Students Empowered (RISE): RISE students receive snacks, help with their homework, and the opportunity to practice their English skills in a small classroom environment. They are also introduced to a number of ‘enhancement’ activities, including painting, modern dance, culinary arts, photography, and much more! As an MPIV volunteer at this site, you have the opportunity to work with refugee children from all around the world and gain a greater understanding of the global community!
